Foreword
I have watched a video of English which is about how to stop translating word for word in head when hear or read something.
The following is my reflection on my own problems after watching this video.
The origin of this video will be placed at the end of this article.
Main
For some people, translating is the first reaction of their brain when they read or hear a piece of English materials, after which they can exactly understand what they read or hear. It's inefficient of course. And for them, problem is why they can't directly get the meaning from reading or hearing but have to pause for a bit while translating it into their own language to help understand and more importantly how to improve this awkward situation, for which this video is created.
Because of "English to English" way of learning English I have always had,I don't have some trouble like above. But I have another big problem.
Our brain have two progress to process language, input and output. For me,the input progress is fluent and natural, but the output progress is blocking and damaged...Most time, this two part progress is cooperative to deal with big tasks of language like conversation. But for me,sometimes the feeling of expressing is like a program that I put a keyword "await" before an asynchronous function which means all current processes of the program is temporarily paused unless the function done and returned. Also, the progress of expressing is similar with this program, which really ruins the experience of conversation. But,it's not to say that I can't express while listening to others.More likely,I'm stuck in word links and language organization.Let me describe more about this problem.
When we have ideas to express, our brain will have a topic surrounding by sentence structure and relevant words to help output ideas, which is a dynamic progress. It's to say that we don't know what we're going to say until we complete the process of linking and organizing words with the ropes of thought and grammar.Analogy again, this dynamic progress is like a stream of water, except that the content of flow changes from water to consciousness. But sometimes for me,it's turbulent flow and you have no idea about its destination or flow direction because my mind is full of unorganized and relevant words about my thoughts to say, causing confusion. It also reminds me of our baby times when we were just able to speak. It seems that at that time,we can hardly make a full sentence to describe what we think but use some relevant words to replace. This guess I generate from life and some science videos may not proper. But I hope it can make my description more clear.I want to output full sentence in English but my mind is surrounded with relevant words about what I really think.Words sometimes also contain some Chinese words with meaning of some parts of my thoughts to complete what is about to be said in my mind, probably because of which I don't know how to express this idea in English.
End
This is my problem. And I believe that it's quite common for our English learners. But I also believe I can solve this strange problem and get improved,as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
